From a limited stock of vintage life rings belonging to a family who once owned a fleet of “Western Ladies” (ex Royal Navy Harbour Defence Motor Launches) we have been able obtain and restore the painted canvas over cork life rings and bring them back to their former glory, these historic life rings rescued from a stock room in Torquay are now fully restored and beautifully hand painted, creating a lovely tribute to the life of these iconic “little ships” which played such an important role during the war and also went on to become an integral part of Torbay life as passenger ferries, transporting locals and holiday makers alike around the bay and up the River Dart for many many years. Sadly these little vessels are no longer with us, but remain firmly in our hearts. Each life ring is a unique tribute to different vessels.
This Life Ring has been lovingly restored and hand painted by a very talented lady here in Brixham as a fitting tribute to The Famous Cunard Liner R.M.S. Queen Mary with hand painted Cunard Lions either side in Gold with Gold shadow style lettering “RMS QUEEN MARY” “LIVERPOOL”, this design of life ring was used aboard The Queen Mary for ceremonial occasions.
The Queen Mary sister ship to RMS Queen Elizabeth is currently permanently berthed in Long Beach California USA. Sadly The Queen Elizabeth was lost to fire and sank in Hong Kong in the 1970s.
Both the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth played a crucial role during WW2 as troop ships, Prime Minister Winston Churchill regularly used the Queen Mary and was enormously proud of the role these liners played in the war.
Please make no mistake this is not an original life ring from The Queen Mary but a reproduction utilising a genuine 1940’s painted canvas over cork life ring similar to those used aboard liners of the period and has been replicated using quality materials as would have been the case aboard the ship..
