Afternoon Tea

Almost two centuries after The Duchess of Bedford dreamt up the fabulous idea of an Afternoon Tea, to satisfy her hunger between lunch and dinner, The Chart Room First Class Coffee Lounge has been keeping this typically English tradition well and truly alive.
The Chart Room First Class Coffee Lounge (in the beautiful fishing port of Brixham, in the heart of the English Riviera) is becoming the undisputed home of this most uplifting and fulfilling of rituals.
Famous over the world for our unique Art Deco venue, The Chart Room takes you back in time to the opulence and splendour of early steamship travel.
The precisely-cut sandwiches, freshly baked cakes and unsurpassable scones make a visit to The Chart Room an unforgettable experience.

The SS Normandie

was a French ocean liner built in Saint-Nazaire, France, for the French Line Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT). She entered service in 1935 as the largest and fastest passenger ship afloat.
Normandie’s novel design and lavish interiors led many to consider her the greatest of ocean liners, and she would go on to heavily influence the French arm of the Streamline Moderne design movement (called the style
paquebot, or “ocean liner style”). During the Second World War, Normandie was seized by U.S. authorities at New York and renamed USS Lafayette. In 1942, while being converted to a troopship, the liner caught fire and capsized. Although salvaged at great expense, restoration was deemed too costly and she was scrapped in 1946.
